The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a universally accessible 4-to-7-day journey, typically starting near Nayapul or Hille, and set within the southern foothills of the Annapurna region. The primary aim is the early morning ascent to Poon Hill, which sits at the trek's maximum altitude of 3,210m, offering a spectacular panoramic sunrise view of the colossal Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peaks.
Since the maximum elevation is relatively low, the trek carries a minimal risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), making it suitable for a wide range of fitness levels. The route itself traverses well-maintained trails that wind through dense rhododendron forests and traditional Gurung and Magar villages.
Physically, daily walks typically average 4 to 6 hours, demanding moderate cardiovascular fitness, and the route includes challenging ascents, most notably the long, steep stone staircase at Ulleri. The trail is extremely well-supported by numerous teahouses, ensuring comfortable lodging, diverse food options, and easy access to water.
For official entry, trekkers must secure the standard Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a Trekker's Information Management System (TIMS) card. The ideal seasons for clear skies and favorable temperatures are Autumn (September–November) and Spring (March–May), when the rhododendron forests are in bloom.
The culmination of the journey is the world-renowned panoramic spectacle from Poon Hill: a colossal sunrise revealing the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, and the iconic Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peaks in breathtaking clarity. This is the quintessential Himalayan introduction, an accessible immersion into the lush, southern foothills of the Annapurna sanctuary.
